Job Description

Job Type: Full time, Hourly

Wage: $21,47/hr.

Location: Trinidad, CO.

Job Description:

Performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City waterlines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Note:  Regular and predictable attendance in the performance of this job is an essential function.

  • Repairs and maintains existing water main lines, distribution lines and pressure regulating stations and completes new pipeline construction and installation.
  • Responds to customer issues to repair leaks and locate water lines.
  • Assists in the installation of water meters and fire hydrants.
  • Conducts sampling of water for chlorine.
  • Maintains equipment, trucks and tools; Cleans and organizes the shop as needed.
  • Hauls materials to job sites.
  • Assists with the maintenance of large motors, such as greasing pumps at stations; provides cleanup of weeks around pump stations.
  • Maintains general record keeping and map updating as required.
  • Use of basic tools, air compressor with pavement cutter, earth tampers, abrasive wheel cutters and other equipment. General driving duties including pickup trucks, dump trucks and trailer towing.
  • Must sometimes work under adverse weather and work conditions. Some heavy lifting may be required.
  • May be required to work extra overtime hours, weekends or holidays in the event of emergencies. Hours of work are generally 7:00am to 3:30pm Monday through Friday. Must respond to emergency call outs and participate in the “on call” program.
  • Performs other duties as required and assigned.

Job Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:       

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 3 – 6 months of related experience or training; 6 to 12 months preferred.
  • Additional vocational or trade school education is highly desirable.
  • Valid Colorado Class A CDL with airbrake endorsement is required or must be acquired within 6 months from date of hire at the applicant’s expense.

Other Necessary Requirements: 

  • Must possess a valid current state-issued driver's license and not be under suspension, revocation or denial nor have any prior alcohol related driving offenses within the last five years.
  • Successful candidates must pass a physical examination in accordance with job duties and a background investigation.
  • Must pass the City’s Drug and Alcohol program, including pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing.
  • Class I Water Distribution Certification required within 12 months.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:             

Knowledge of:

  • Safety practices and procedures related to the operation and maintenance of department infrastructure and functions.
  • Emergency, routine and preventative maintenance programs.
  • Operation and maintenance requirements of power-driven equipment.

Skilled in:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Public relations and customer service skills to effectively work with customers, employee, supervisors and department heads.

Ability to:

  • Physically perform the essential functions of the job under minimal supervision.
  • Learn new skills and techniques.
  • Maintain licenses and certifications.
  • Accept responsibility and account for his/her actions.
  • Effectively interact with other City Departments and coworkers to accomplish work.

The employee must on occasion lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance. Requires the dexterity, agility and ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds without injuring yourself or others.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is often exposed to outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock, dampness, direct sunlight, dust, pollen, insect stings and animals.

Tools and Equipment Used:         

Hand and power tools common to the trade, including heavy motor vehicle, air compressor, detection devices, computer, mobile radio, telephone, etc.

Supervision Received:

Works under the general supervision of the Water Department Foreman.

Supervision Exercised:

None.
