Job Title:  Part -Time Special Trips School Bus Driver

Prepared Date: February 2026

Compensation: $25.50/hour - hours variable according to trip requirements. Some trips on weekends.  Part time, hourly position.

FLSA:  Non-Exempt

Work Year:  Most trips take place during the school year. During busy seasons, drivers may have the opportunity to work 2–3 trips per week. Trip availability is dependent upon scheduling needs and whether full-time drivers elect to cover assignments.



Reports To:  Transportation Director

Position Summary:
Provide safe, reliable transportation for student-athletes and coaching staff to and from extracurricular activities and athletic events, primarily on Fridays and Saturdays. This role supports student participation in school-sponsored programs by ensuring a safe and positive travel experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safely operate a school bus transporting students and staff to out-of-town athletic and activity trips.
  • Trips typically include 1–3 hours of travel to the event location, 2–4 hours of paid wait time during the event, and 1–3 hours of return travel to Leadville. Tournament travel may involve longer paid wait times.

  • Maintain full control of the vehicle at all times and remain alert and attentive throughout transport.

  • Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure the bus is in safe operating condition prior to departure.

  • Provide supervision and assistance to students when entering and exiting the bus and when crossing streets.

  • Safely load and unload passengers using wheelchair lifts and appropriate safety equipment as needed.

  • Perform emergency evacuation procedures during out-of-town trips as required.

  • Clean the bus interior and exterior windows following trips.

  • Complete required logs, reports, and trip documentation accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Promptly report breakdowns, delays, emergencies, or safety concerns to the Transportation Department.

  • Attend required in-service trainings, including CPR and First Aid certification, and complete required physical examinations.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING High school diploma, GED, or equivalent vocational school or short term courses

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). District-paid training is provided; CDL required within 1–2 months of hire.

  • Must obtain a valid Colorado “B” license with P2-S endorsement within 1–2 months of hire.

  • Must successfully pass and maintain a current Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination.

  • Must pass the Federal DOT drug test and comply with all DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.

  • CPR and First Aid certifications required within 3 months of hire (training provided as needed).

  • Must pass all required background checks for employment in a school setting.

  • Demonstrated safe driving practices and effective communication skills.

  • Ability to work positively and appropriately with students, including individuals with special needs.

  • Knowledge of pre-trip inspection procedures, safe backing techniques, and mountain/terrain driving skills preferred at hire; required within 2 months of hire.

  • Operating knowledge of various school buses, equipment used to support individuals with disabilities (including lifts and securement systems), and use of tire chains preferred at hire; required within 2 months of hire.

 

EXPERIENCE  No experience required.  Previous truck or bus driving experience preferred.



SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY  This job has no supervisory responsibilities; however, this position is responsible for supervising passenger conduct on the bus.

 

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING Work is assigned by the Transportation Director and/or Mechanic.  Requires independent judgment to determine if the bus is safe to operate, when and if route deviations are required, and when to utilize additional driving safety precautions.  Additionally, independent judgment must be applied to determine appropriate type and severity of discipline for passengers.  Decision making requires collaboration with the Transportation Director, Mechanic, other drivers, teachers, principals, and coaches.  Work is guided by District Driver's Handbook, driver judgment, supervisor's directives, and state and federal traffic laws and regulations.  Errors in decision making could lead to route delays, mechanical breakdowns, misjudging road conditions, traffic accidents, and inappropriate student discipline.  The supervisor is occasionally involved in decision making. 

 

DIVERSITY OF DUTIES  Duties require cross training in basic automotive mechanics, student management, and basic health care.  Duties and actions impact students, parents, school administrators, and the general public.  Duties extend across several District departments on a daily basis.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee is occasionally required to walk, climb or balance, and taste or smell.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

 

MENTAL FUNCTIONS  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to compare, communicate, use interpersonal skills, and negotiate.  Frequently required to analyze, coordinate, compute, evaluate, and compile.  Occasionally required to copy, instruct, and synthesize.
