Position Summary
The Senior Accountant is a hands-on, full-cycle accounting role in a niche, high-pressure nonprofit and public funding environment. This position is responsible for end-to-end ownership of the accounting cycle for multiple clients, including AP/AR, payroll, grant accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation, while working directly with the Owner/Accounting Manager and client contacts.
This is not basic bookkeeping. We work in a highly regulated, deadline-driven environment serving nonprofit and public funding clients, where compliance requirements and deadlines are non-negotiable. The ideal candidate has experience in the post-award grant space, and is a highly self-directed, experienced accountant who thrives in this niche, high-pressure setting, can navigate complex funding and reporting requirements, and delivers accurate, audit-ready work with minimal oversight.
Key Responsibilities
- Take full ownership of assigned client books, from daily transactions through month-end close and financial reporting, with minimal supervision.
- Perform full-cycle accounting for assigned nonprofit and publicly funded entities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank and credit card reconciliations, grant tracking, and general ledger maintenance.
- Prepare and process payroll for multiple clients, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely submission in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports for clients, adhering to nonprofit accounting standards and funder reporting requirements.
- Post and review journal entries, accruals, and adjustments as needed for accurate period closes.
- Monitor and maintain clean, organized accounting records across multiple systems and entities.
- Communicate with clients regarding transaction questions, missing information, deadlines, and financial results.
- Work comfortably in a niche, high-pressure environment serving nonprofit and public funding clients, where deadlines and compliance requirements are non-negotiable.
- Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes, improve documentation, and enhance internal controls; make recommendations to the Owner/Accounting Manager and clients.
- Assist with year-end close and coordination with external CPAs or tax preparers.
- Support the Owner/Accounting Manager with ad hoc reporting, analyses, and projects.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of full-cycle accounting experience (AP, AR, reconciliations, journal entries, financial statement preparation)
- Nonprofit experience highly preferred; fund accounting, grants management, and financial reporting.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards (e.g., ASC 958), and grant compliance requirements.
- Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, or similar) and solid Excel skills.
- Experience processing payroll for multiple entities and familiarity with relevant payroll regulations.
- Demonstrated success managing multiple competing deadlines and producing accurate, audit-ready financials under time pressure.
- Proven track record of working independently with minimal supervision, managing competing priorities, and consistently meeting strict deadlines.
- High level of autonomy, self-direction, and proactive problem-solving ability; must be able to identify issues, troubleshoot, and resolve them without constant direction.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and follow-through in a high-pressure, compliance-focused environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable communicating directly with clients and responding promptly to time-sensitive requests.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple clients/entities simultaneously, prioritize work effectively, and maintain composure under tight deadlines.
- This role requires professional-level accounting judgment, technical expertise, and strong attention to detail—experience beyond basic bookkeeping or household budgeting. Candidates must have demonstrable experience managing complex, regulated accounting functions independently.
