Job Description:

Performs tasks and activities related in assisting in the construction, repair, testing and maintenance of the electrical distribution and generating systems of the City of Trinidad Power & Light Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Note:  Regular and predictable attendance in the performance of this job is an essential function.

  • Assists the Lineman in the various aspects of line maintenance, repair and construction.
  • Prepare and assemble various line apparatus required for particular work being performed.
  • Drive and operate various City of Trinidad vehicles.
  • Keep work areas clean and organized. Pickup scrap wire, boxes and other discarded materials.
  • Keep unauthorized people away from work area.
  • Stock trucks with material commonly used on a daily basis.
  • Assist with cleaning warehouse and storage yard area.
  • Assist with washing and maintaining equipment in proper work order and cleaning of protective equipment.
  • Use of various hand and power tools.
  • Requires the agility and ability to climb wood poles, operate equipment safely and correctly, perform delicate maneuvers of equipment and devices around live electrical equipment and wiring and to work in inclement weather.
  • Assist with loading of various materials onto trucks and/or trailers.
  • May be required to work extra overtime hours, weekends or holidays in the event of emergencies. Hours of work are generally 7:00 am to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Must respond to emergency call outs and participate in the “on call” program.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:       

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience working with personnel in the maintenance, repair, inspection and construction industries with special emphasis on electrical installations. Working on secondary electrical distribution systems preferred.
  • Any combination of work experience relating to electrical line work, construction, and equipment operation is a plus.

Other Necessary Requirements: 

  • Must possess a valid current state-issued driver’s license, not under suspension, revocation or denial nor have any prior alcohol related driving offenses within the last five years. A Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement is required or must be acquired within six (6) months from date of hire at the applicant’s expense.
  • Successful candidates must pass a background investigation, drug screen and physical examination in accordance with job duties prior to employment.
  • Must pass City’s Drug & Alcohol program, including pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing and follow-up testing.
  • CPR and First Aid training required.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:             

Knowledge of:

  • Applicable laws, codes, ordinances, safety and health regulations related to electric distribution.
  • Occupational hazards and the necessity of safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of electrical circuitry and the ability to apply that knowledge to solve problems.
  • Knowledge of operations of vehicles of varying size and weight classification ranging from pickup to dump trucks. Must be competent in the proper use and operation of various hand tools and small equipment and must follow all established safety standards in the performance of assigned duties.

Skilled in:

  • The ability to listen to, read, understand and communicate the English language so that others are able to understand. This must be done both orally and in writing, at the level appropriate for the position held.
  • Safe work record and demonstration of a strong work ethic.
  • Strong organizational skills and a willingness to be pro-active and accept new challenges.

Ability to:

  • Work in accordance with quality and safety standards, policies and guidelines.
  • Read and comprehend detailed and inter-related instruction sets for technical manuals. Must be able to identify all materials and equipment related to the electrical systems.
  • Pay close attention to detail.
  • Maintain effective working relations with co-workers.
  • Reliably and predictably carry out duties.

The employee must on occasion lift and/or move up to 75 pounds with or without assistance.  Requires the dexterity, agility and ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 60 pounds without injuring yourself or others.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is often exposed to outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock, dampness, direct sunlight, dust, pollen, insect stings and animals.

Tools and Equipment Used:         

  • Personal computer, Microsoft Office Suite, and databases; phone; fax and copy machine.
  • Examples of such equipment are man lifts, line trucks, back hoes, trencher, capstan winches, hydraulic power units and associated tooling, hoisting devices, crimping devices, line location equipment, chainsaws, various hand tools, electronic troubleshooting devices, infrared cameras, and other tools associated with electrical trade.

Supervision Received:

Works under the direct supervision of the Line Crew Foreman and the Power & Light Director.

Supervision Exercised:

None.
