Job Description:

The Dean of Students position at Trinidad State College (TSC) is a full-time (12 month), on campus professional position that carries responsibility for administering and supervising multiple areas including: admissions, enrollment management, housing, mental health and well-being, COSI Achieve, student life, student government, student conduct and student retention programming. The Dean will provide inclusive, growth-mindset leadership, innovative vision and a commitment to retention programs as well as the strategic goals of the college. In addition, the Dean will act as the senior student conduct advisor, overseeing the student conduct processes. A creative problem solver and collaborator, the ideal candidate will create a positive and engaged culture.  The position is located on the Trinidad Campus but serves the entire institution.


Examples of Duties

Responsibilities include an institutional approach to oversee and develop comprehensive enrollment and retention programming involving social and educational student development. This will be accomplished through the following duties:  

  • Provide leadership in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan established by the College, furthering college-wide Goals and initiatives.
  • Provide oversight and supervision of the enrollment management team by directly supporting the Admissions office and Director of Enrollment Management and Student Success.
  • Oversee and support the administration of the COSI Achieve Grant
  • Oversee and support the housing Director to meet the goals and success of the housing manager and RAs to ensure a positive housing experience.
  • Supervise the Mental Health and Well-Being Coordinator: Create, attend, support and promote Student Activities. Ensure promotions for programs and activities are posted/advertised in a timely manner. Infuse student development, prevention programming and compliance requirements into activities.  
  • Develop data driven retention strategies to serve student populations on both campuses. 
  • Promote and enforce a secure environment. Work closely with security to coordinate security coverage at events. 
  • Assist the Security Coordinator to maintain records and develop the Annual Security Report and Biennial Drug Free Schools reports for the institution.  
  • Maintain daily office hours and offer a high degree of availability and visibility for all students.  
  • Oversee and support the distribution of records including student activities, SGA meetings, agendas and minutes. 
  • Serve as the Senior Student Affairs Officer overseeing the Student Code of Conduct process. Enforce college and departmental policies and regulations in alignment with TSC guidelines. 
  • Oversee and work with the Residence Hall Director and housing manager to update the Residence Life Handbook annually, ensure residences are provided with a positive academic living environment for education success, and assure residence life programing is provided to support safety, academic success, and resident life. 
  • Serve as a member of the Behavioral Intervention Team. Advise, counsel, follow up and make student referrals as needed.  
  • Develop and maintain budgets by preparing spending plan and recording all expenditures for activities, events and programming in coordination with supervisor.  
  • Lead and support college retention initiatives including but not limited to new student orientation, online orientation, welcome week, online tutoring, academic support, end of year programs and graduation, Student Life and prevention programming. Participate and lead activities on both campuses.  
  • While not a member of the academic advising team, the Dean should maintain a high level of knowledge to assist students who are seeking help with various academic or financial aid questions, and direct students to the correct staff member for assistance. Focus on serving undeclared students and/or students that do not qualify for grant support. 
  • Create collaborative relationships with other departments and college personnel.
  • Participate in assessment and continuous improvement in activities and reporting. Oversee the assessment and effectiveness of student life, activities and community programs. 
  • Develop relationships with students to help them be successful at TSC. 
  • Supervise and support the Student Life coordination of athletic game day, pregame and half-time activities for students.  
  • Supervise updates to the TSC website regarding Student Life, Student Activities, and SGA 
  • Maintain database of current students. Identify and target communication for different student groups.  
  • Serve as leader with the Early Alert team. Design and distribute communications to support and retain students.  
  • Implement, maintain and report data to evaluate the progress of students from outreach through enrollment.
  • Collaborates with Financial Aid, Advising and other Student Services Departments in order to maximize efforts and meet retention and enrollment goals.
  • Maintains knowledge of best practices, new developments and innovative enrollment strategies in community colleges and higher education; recommends changes to maintain relevance of programs and services to meet student and institutional needs.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Required Qualifications


  • Master’s Degree preferred field from a regionally accredited institution
  • Experience in higher education
  • Willing to travel and serve both campuses of the institution 
  • Supervisor experience
  • Must have a strong commitment to the rural community college mission
  • Ability to work with diverse populations, including faculty, staff, students and the general public
  • Demonstrated experience working with non-traditional and first-generation students
  • Participation in professional organizations (please list those in which you are an active member)
