Job Description
The Cafe Shift Lead is responsible for overseeing and managing daily operations of the cafe during their shift. They ensure the delivery of high-quality customer service, effective team management, and the smooth running of all cafe processes. This includes supervising staff, ensuring inventory and cleanliness standards are met, and handling customer concerns in a professional and friendly manner.
Key Responsibilities:
- Customer Service
- Greet and assist customers in a friendly and professional manner.
- Address customer concerns and resolve issues promptly to maintain customer satisfaction.
- Ensure orders are accurately taken, prepared, and delivered in a timely manner.
- Staff Supervision
- Lead and motivate the cafe team, ensuring they are trained, equipped, and focused on providing excellent service.
- Assign tasks and responsibilities to team members, ensuring that each employee is performing effectively.
- Monitor the performance of team members and provide feedback, coaching, and training as needed.
- Operational Management
- Ensure the cafe is operating efficiently by overseeing opening and closing procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment for customers and staff.
- Assist with inventory control and ordering supplies, ensuring the cafe is well-stocked.
- Maintain health and safety standards according to company policies and local regulations.
- Shift Coordination
- Manage shift schedules, ensuring appropriate staffing levels at all times.
- Ensure smooth transitions between shifts by properly communicating any necessary information to the next shift.
- Maintain a calm, efficient environment, particularly during busy periods.
- Sales and Performance
- Monitor cafe sales and work with the team to meet or exceed daily targets.
- Ensure that promotional items and offers are effectively communicated to customers.
- Handle the cash register, process payments, and ensure proper cash management during the shift.
- Training and Development
- Demonstrate high levels of competency in all positions relative to the operations of the business (coffee, food, baking, bartending…)
- Lead the training and onboarding of new employees.
- Ensure staff are familiar with the menu, cafe policies, and procedures.
- Encourage teamwork and positive attitudes among staff members.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (required); additional education in hospitality or business management is a plus.
- Previous experience in a customer service or food service environment, with at least 1-2 years in a leadership role.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle stressful situations and maintain professionalism.
- Good organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of food safety and hygiene practices.
- Current Servsafe Certificate
Physical Requirement
- Ability to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 lbs. for extended periods.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain energy levels throughout the shift.
